What is the one thing that is not only good for your wallet, but also good for your well-being? Giving back and volunteering! The holidays are always a time of deal shopping, parties, treats, and time with family, but it also a time when those in need really benefit from the generosity of others. While opening up your wallet and making donations is one way to feel good about helping those in need, taking time out of your day to volunteer is another great way to feel the full benefits of giving back. According to The Balance, an online magazine, volunteering has at least 15 health benefits both physical and mental including longevity and combating loneliness.

I know for myself, when I give back through volunteering with Junior League as well as Dress for Success, I literally feel happy the rest of the day. There is this deep gratitude I cultivate when I serve another person or organization and, I am not alone. According to the Huffington Post: “Studies show that when people donated to charity, the mesolimbic system, the portion of the brain responsible for feelings of reward, was triggered. The brain also releases feel-good chemicals and spurs you to perform more kind acts — something psychologists call “helper’s high.”

So get out there and help your community! Find an organization that is dear to your heart, whether that be animals, the environment, or children. If you are local to Fresno, you can check out to find out what local organizations need your help. Your wallet, and your well-being will thank you!
